Fans remember Punjabi poetess Amrita Pritam as the person who penned the pain of partition. She was born on August 31, 1919, in Gujranwala. Amrita migrated to India after the Partition and became a published writer in 1936. At the time she was barely 17 years old. Some of her literary works involve writings namely Pinjar, Suneray and Nagmani.
She was the first woman to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956 and the first Punjabi woman to be felicitated with the Padma Shri Award.
On her birth anniversary we we salute her for her contributions towards the nation.
